Reflect on the simile and metaphor worksheet. Which topic challenged you the most when creating your figurative language, and why? In your response, explain what made that topic difficult and how you worked through the challenge (or what you might do differently next time).

Prompt Response: I found that I struggled with finding a simile for overcoming failure. For some reason, I could not figure out how to incorporate imagery for getting over a failure. I eventually thought of one of my failures and how piano keys kept bouncing back up no matter what.  Summary: We worked on our simile and metaphor poster.  Reflection: I realized that there are many ways to include imagery in our everyday lives. I will continue to foster this creativity.

Today you created similes and metaphors that reflect your struggles, growth, and resilience. In a well-developed paragraph, reflect on the process. What did you learn about yourself while writing your figurative language?

Prompt Response: I found myself looking for things that reminded me of those moments. I learned that I am a pretty visual person. I know that I'm a visual learner, but I like being able to imagine descriptions that are similar to events. It was nice to see that certain moments and memories are shared among peers and other people. Summary: We wrote similes and metaphors. Reflection: I realized that my worst moments are very relatable to others. I will use this to comfort myself when I feel alone.

Describe how you spent your time, any activities, traditions, travel, hobbies, or moments that stood out to you. You may also discuss something new you tried, something you learned, or how the break helped you reset before returning to school. Keep your response appropriate for a school setting and focus on experiences you are comfortable sharing publicly

Prompt Response: During the break, I baked brookies. It was really nice to bake something that my loved ones and I could enjoy. I also spent time going out and hanging out with friends which was really nice. I always love being able to talk to friends while we do random things.  Summary: We read and analyzed a poem by Maya Angelou. Reflection: I learned that people can change a lot in their lives and that they can do many amazing things. I will use this to motivate me when I doubt myself.

If you had to describe how you show love using only three objects (for example: a playlist, a hoodie, a late-night snack, a long text message, etc.), what would you choose and why? Explain what each object represents and how it connects to your personality.

Prompt Response: I would choose to bake their favorite dessert because I think it shows dedication because baking is time consuming. I would also crochet them a personal gift because I like showing my love through gift giving, and I think good hand made gifts really show that you're willing to put in the work. Lastly I would get them their favorite meal because in my culture, you show your love by sharing food.  Summary: We wrote poems for our most loved one. Reflection: I realized that love is a very complicated matter and that you shouldn't linger on the past. I will think of this whenever I feel the need to linger in the past.

Consider your experience reading The Color Purple (a fictional novel), Fences (a play/drama), and Wild (a nonfiction memoir). Which type of longer text did you enjoy the most, the novel, the play, or the memoir, and which did you find the most challenging? Explain your preference, describe what made that type of text more engaging or accessible for you, and reflect on how understanding your preference might influence how you approach future readings.

Prompt Response: I enjoyed reading The Color Purple the most and I found Wild to be the most difficult to read. This is mostly because I like reading a story that is more about time moving linearly. Cheryl mostly recounts her story, and while that is a good form of storytelling, I still prefer The Color Purple. It also may have been the plot of the stories. I just found The Color Purple to be a more interesting story overall. Summary: We listened to more interactive orals. Reflection: I learned that there are many ways to make classmates participate in a class discussion. I will use this next time I have a presentation.

Even if you have not presented yet, how did participating as a listener, note-taker, or responder during the Interactive Oral help you prepare for your own discussion?

Prompt Response: I was able to prepare for my interactive oral by listening to others give examples. It helped me know what to expect when I was writing my own interactive oral. I was able to understand what I needed to prepare for. Summary: We listened to an interactive oral. Reflection: I realized that each chapter can be analyzed very differently. I will make sure to pay attention to each chapter individually.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day week, describe your idea of a perfect day spent with someone you care about (a friend, family member, or significant person in your life)

Prompt response: A perfect day spent with a loved one would include a nice dinner and going out for a sweet treat. I would probably go out and do a relaxing activity like go to the museum or go ice-skating. We would then go home and watch a movie and bake something.  Summary: we presented our lesson today. Reflection: I learned that one chapter can say a lot about a book. I will read individual chapters in more detail.

What is the best piece of advice of that your parent or guardian has given you? Tell what the advice was and what prompted you to ask the question.

Prompt Response: My parents told me that in life I need to become irreplaceable. If I work hard and make sure I cannot be replaced, then I can relax. It's important to know how hard you need to work to get to where you want to be in life. Summary: I was not here today. Reflection: There are a lot of things that can happen when you miss school. I need to make the most of my experiences.

What is the most challenging part of working in a group? Discuss a time when a group assignment did not go as well as you planned and how you learned from that experience.

Prompt Response: The hardest part about working in a group is dividing the work evenly. You always get one person that does the majority of the work and the others that just ride on their tailcoats. Once I had an AP biology assignment and I had to do half of it by myself even though it was a four person project. I learned that you just have to suck things up and do them yourself sometimes.  Summary: We discussed our upcoming assignment. Reflection: I realized that working in a group can be both good and bad. I will use this to weigh my options in the future.

What is the most challenging part of writing an essay for you? Is it brainstorming, organizing ideas, writing a strong thesis, or something else? How do you plan to overcome this challenge?

Prompt Response: The hardest part about writing an essay is thinking about the little details. I plan to overcome this by thinking about the smaller things when I brainstorm. I usually tend to focus too much on the big picture, but by thinking in more detail, I should be able to go more into depth about my topics.  Summary: We learned how to write essays. Reflection: I learned about different ways to prevent writer's block. I will use this to stay creative when I am writing.

Describe a real moment in your life that felt like the beginning of a powerful story. Tell what happened, and why it felt like a turning point in your life?

Prompt Response: I've lived a pretty plain life. I haven't done anything particularly big in my life, but I remember when I began playing cello. Specifically, I remember when I picked it back up again in high school. I began to love the instrument. It felt like I was actually able to play and instrument. I had played piano for about ten years, and I was never very good at it. I felt like I was a musician. Summary: We watched presentations on Wild. Reflection: I realized that there are so many ways to interpret the same chapter. I will use this to compare my thoughts on a passage with others when I have the chance.
