Why is the choice to serve leftover Chinese food significant in “Lunch”? How could the author have made a more culturally meaningful choice for her grandmother? Use the text to support your answer. Then reflect on a time when you realized you could have done something more meaningful for someone else.

Prompt Response: Serving leftover Chinese food signifies how the family has grown apart following her grandfather's death. The author could have made a dish from her culture to be more meaningful to her grandmother. She could have made her grandmother's traditional stew. For my parents'birthday I could have gotten them better presents rather than just baking them something this year, but I didn't have the time.  Summary: We read a short story. Reflection: I learned that food can connect people to their families. I will use this to learn more about my family's recipes.

Write about a time when you realized that your perception of a particular food was based on a stereotype. Explain what the food was, what you originally believed about it, and where that belief came from. Then describe how your perspective changed after experiencing or learning more about the food. Be sure to include specific details about the moment your thinking shifted and what you learned from that experience.

Prompt Response: I thought I would hate cabbage. It was because cartoons had always depicted fresh veggies as being gross. This changed when I went to a camp trip and ate fresh cabbage and actually liked it. I realized that I really needed to give foods a second chance. Summary: We worked on our food presentations. Reflection: I realized that there was a lot I did not know about my culture. I will go on to research more about my family's culture.

How does the New Orleans episode of Street Food: USA show that food represents more than just something people eat? Explain how at least one food from the episode reflects culture, identity, or community.

Prompt Response: The episode shows the importance of food by showing how it connects people. The crayfish reflects community because everyone eats together. It's messy eating it, so it really shows how people are able to just gather and have fun. Summary: We watched an episode of street food. Reflection: I learned about the different foods in New Orleans and their importance to culture. I will try them if I ever get the chance.

Today, we continued our discussion about culture and food. What is one dish from your culture that is a must-have as a representation of your culture? Identify the dish and explain what it is and why it is significant.

Prompt Response: One dish that is a must have is dim sum. There is always going to be something, and you can try a lot of food at one time. It's really a great experience to learn more about Chinese food. It is significant because people have always gone out as families to share food around one big table. Summary: We discussed our food presentations. Reflection: I learned about how cultures are connected to food. I will use this to broaden my horizons and try more food.

Food is often tied to memory and emotion. Describe a meaningful memory connected to a meal or dish. Analyze how that experience shaped your understanding of family, culture, or belonging.

Prompt Response: I remember my grandma buying me a right duck leg. When I went to Hong Kong for the first time, she went out of her way to get it for me. Every day, when I was there, she went and bought me a roast duck leg just because she knew how much I loved it. Even though I was only three, it made me realize just how much she loved me. Summary: We did a worksheet. Reflection: I learned that food is connected to culture. I will think of this whenever I eat anything.

How did the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, proofreading, and finalizing) shape the strength of the final essay, and what was learned about your personal strengths and areas for growth as a writer?

Prompt Response: The writing process strengthens the final essay by tweaking the information. I learned that I am good at brainstorming and writing things down on paper, but I struggle with tweaking my work. I find that writing is much easier now that I know what I should be doing with the writing process. Summary: We wrote our essays. Reflection: I learned that writing while being timed can be stressful. I will use this to consider my time when writing in the future.

Why is drafting an essential step in the writing process rather than going straight to a final version? Use your own experience from this essay to explain how drafting improved (or revealed weaknesses in) your thinking.

Prompt Response: Drafting is important because it gets your thoughts into coherent sentences. It's great to have something you can tweak. Having it all on paper gives you the opportunity to change anything that doesn't seem quite right. Summary: We wrote our drafts. Reflection:  I learned that it is important to write drafts. I will use this to help my writing in the future.

Reflect on your writing process for essays. Which part of writing an essay do you struggle with the most (for example: developing a thesis, organizing ideas, finding strong evidence, writing introductions, or explaining your analysis)? Which parts of essay writing do you feel most confident about? Explain why you feel strong in those areas and what specifically makes the challenging part difficult for you. Include at least one goal for how you plan to improve your essay writing skills.

Prompt Response: I struggle with commentary and analysis the most. I find it hard to put into words the thoughts that I have on a subject. I tend to restate evidence rather than actually analyze it properly. Summary: We began writing our drafts in class. Reflection: I learned that there are many reasons to write and many things to find in the small details.

As we move toward the end of the semester, what are your top three college choices right now? Identify the colleges and explain why you are attracted to each one. Even if college is not currently on your radar, you must still respond to the question and explain your thinking.

Prompt Response: My top choices are UGA, Georgia Tech, and Auburn. These are good colleges to me because they aren't too far. UGA and Auburn both have good law programs, which is what I want to study. Tech is a really great school that would allow me to stay close to home. I already got into all three colleges, but I'm probably going to UGA because it has the best law program.. Summary: I was not here today. Reflection: I learned that when playing an instrument in a large group, you must pay attention to how loudly the melody is playing. I will use this in future performances.

During brainstorming, one idea usually stands out. What is the most interesting or strongest idea you came up with for your essay, and what made you choose it over the others?

Prompt Response: I came up with focusing on Cheryl's lingering attachment to her mother's death leading her to force herself to become better. She learns to survive thanks to the loss of her mother. The people around her also learnt to grow and survive.  Summary: We worked on our argumentative essays. Reflection: I learned about the many ways there are to write an essay. I will use this to write my essay.

After completing the assignments on making college affordable and finding the best college fit, what is one thing you learned that you did not know before? Why do you think this information is important for seniors to understand?

Prompt Response: I learned that counselors encourage questions. It's very important for me because I usually worry that I'm bothering people. I like being able to know who I can ask for help. Summary: We learned more about college.  Reflection: I learned more about college. I will use it to help choose a college.

Writing is a process, and the first draft is rarely perfect. Strong writers improve their work through revision. After reviewing and revising your literary argument paragraph, what changes did you make to strengthen your writing?

Prompt Response: I deepened my analysis of Cheryl's hardships. I also added in more connection words to strengthen my argument. Overall, I wanted to use better literary analysis words. Summary: We revised our drafts. Reflection: I learned that there are a lot of things that need tweaking in your first draft. I will use this to help me understand what I need to change.

Today we discussed why academic writing must reflect your own thinking and understanding rather than relying on artificial intelligence to generate your ideas. After learning about the expectations for authentic writing, reflect on why it is important for students to write essays in their own words.

Prompt Response: It is important to write in your own words because it fosters creativity. It also helps create a good work ethic in students. Otherwise, no one would be able to be individual and we would lose what makes us human. Summary: We learned about AI usage in schools. Reflection: I learned that there are professors that encourage AI use. I will use this to consider which colleges I should pick for higher education.

Reflect on your experiences with essay writing. What aspects of writing essays do you find most engaging or challenging? Discuss your personal strengths as a writer as well as specific areas where you experience difficulty or would like to improve. Support your reflection with clear examples from your own writing experiences.

Prompt Response: I find writing about myself quite difficult. I like writing about other subjects and analyzing more. Describing myself is difficult because I don't really like thinking about it. I find writing about history to be my strongest subject. I like comparing history to present day problems.  Summary: We reviewed how to write an argumentative essay. Reflection: I realized that everyone has strengths and weaknesses in writing. I will use this to help me become a better writer.

After viewing your classmates’ digital posters and reading the feedback comments left on your work, what new ideas or perspectives did you gain about your poster? Reflect on how the feedback influenced the way you think about your creative choices and describe what you learned about the creative process while designing and presenting your poster.

Prompt Response: I realized that we are all very creative in different ways. Despite our creativity, we all harbor similar thoughts and events in our lives. I learned that I like to have layouts before I completely fill in information.  Summary: We read and commented on our classmates' posters. Reflection: I learned about how different people can react when given the same prompt. I will use this to think about our collective creativity.
