How important is education in your life right now? Do you think students around the world value school the same way you do? Explain your reasoning.

Prompt Response: Education is very important to me. I'm sure many students agree, but in certain places, there are students that find education pointless. This is likely because of a cultural standpoint that does not praise intelligence. Summary: We watched a short film. Reflection: I learned about how difficult it is for some children to get to school. I will learn to value my own education.

After viewing your classmates’ presentations, which cultural group did you find most interesting? Explain why. Then, reflect on how this presentation changed or deepened your understanding of that culture.

Prompt Response: I found the Latina women presentation the most interesting. This is because it seems to be one of the most stereotyped groups. The presentation helped me realize my own biases and opinions. Summary: We watched each other present PowerPoints. Reflection: I learned that there are many stereotypes that are not necessarily harmful. I will use this to help me have better literacy.

As we approach the end of the course, reflect on the texts, discussions, and concepts explored in Multicultural Literature. What is one significant lesson about culture or identity that has stood out to you? Explain why this lesson is meaningful and analyze how it connects to your own experiences or perspective.

Prompt Response: I learned that everyone has different experiences in their cultures. This is important because this has helped me generalize much less. It connects to how people have made generalizations about me in the past.  Summary: Reflection:

Which factor plays a greater role in shaping your future career choice: your genuine interest and passion for the field, or the financial benefits and stability it can provide? In your response, explain which one you prioritize and why, and consider how this decision might impact your long-term happiness, motivation, and overall quality of life.

Prompt Response: I prioritize the financial benefits because I want to be able to take care of my loved ones. This includes any future family as well as my current family. I feel like it is very important to be able to take care of the people I care about.  Summary: We researched careers. Reflection: I learned what the median salaries of the jobs I'm most interested in are. I will use this to help me decide what I want to do in the future.

What is the most exciting thing about graduating high school for you personally? In your response, explain what you are looking forward to most after graduation (college, career, independence, travel, etc.) and why it matters to you.

Prompt Response: The most exciting thing about graduating from high school is getting a new kind of freedom. I am really looking forward to college because after college I will be able to  help others. I really look forward to meeting new people. Summary: We watched a TedTalk. Reflection: I learned that there are a lot of paths for the future. I will use this to consider my options in the future.

Clothing is often tied to identity and culture. Describe an outfit or style you like that may not fit what others expect from you. How have people responded, and what does this reveal about stereotypes in society?

Prompt Response: The cutesy style may not fit what people expect from me. I usually wear baggy clothing, so when I wear a skirt instead, I tend to get a reaction from others. They usually say it's so weird to see me wear something different. This reveals that once people have an idea of you, it's hard to change it. Summary: We worked on our presentations. Reflection: I learned about how important communication is in a group setting. I will use this when I work on other group projects.

Think about a film that represents your culture (or a culture you identify with) in a positive and meaningful way. Explain how the film represents the culture and why this portrayal matters. Be sure to include specific examples from the film.

Prompt Response: I felt like Mulan represented the part of Chinese culture that wanted to do what was best for their parents. Mulan goes to war for her parents, and it is important to show how filial Chinese people are to their parents. I really appreciate how the movie was based on a Chinese story.  Summary: We worked on our projects. Reflection: I learned that stereotypes are everywhere in the media. I will use this to consider what I see in films

The short film Born With It shows how stereotypes can shape the way people see others and even how individuals see themselves. Reflect on the main character’s experience and explain how stereotypes impacted his identity and sense of belonging. Then, connect this to a broader idea: how can stereotypes influence the way a culture or group is understood by others? Use specific examples from the film to support your response.

Prompt Response: Stereotypes made the children want to stay away from the boy and made him believe he was sick. Stereotypes can lead cultures to treat another culture harshly. Like how the Japanese children treated the boy badly because they believed that all black people has AIDs.  Summary: We watched a short film.  Reflection: I learned about how badly stereotypes can be. I will use this to reconsider my own biases.

Cities can also be an important part of a person’s cultural identity, shaping their values, experiences, and way of life. Think of a movie or TV show that changed the way you see a specific city. How was that city and its culture portrayed, and did it present a full picture or a “single story”? Explain how this portrayal could influence how people view those who live there.

Prompt Response: When I saw Suits, it made me think that New York was full of fast paced professionals. It showed only a single story of a typical white man making it in New York as a successful lawyer. This portrayal can lead people to believe that New York can make anyone successful. Summary: We began working on our projects. Reflection: I learned that there are many portrayals of different people on screen. I will use this to analyze the movies I watch.

Why do you think filmmakers continue to use stereotypes, even when they can be harmful or inaccurate? Explain one reason discussed in class and give your opinion on whether this justifies their use.

Prompt Response: Filmmakers continue to use stereotypes because they are easy and people expect them. This doesn't justify their use because being unique and creative and accurate can still make good money. Most people still want to see themselves presented accurately.  Summary: We worked on a commonlilt. Reflection: I learned about the different reasons why stereotypes are still used. I will use this to analyze the books I read.

Think about the most stereotypical film you have ever seen. This could be a movie that represents a specific culture, race, gender, or group in an oversimplified or unrealistic way. In your response, explain what film you are referring to, what stereotypes were present in the film, and how those stereotypes shaped your understanding of that group at the time

Prompt Response: In Mean Girls, there is the stereotype that the perfect girls are skinny and girly. The film also depicts nerds as being a bunch of guys that love math. At that time it made me think that pretty girls were selfish and shallow. Summary: We watched stereotypes about Asian and black women. Reflection: I learned about the stereotypes from my culture. I will use this to fight back against bias.

Hair can be a powerful way people express who they are and where they come from. Think about your own hair, your style, texture, or how you choose to wear it. How does your hair connect to your culture or your identity? Describe a moment when your hair made you feel proud, uncomfortable, or misunderstood, and explain why.

Prompt Response: I choose to wear my hair down because it's straight and flat. My hair connects to my culture because in Confucianism, they believe that hair is a gift from your parents. My hair made me uncomfortable in the past because people seemed to be obsessed with touching my hair because it was so smooth. Summary: We watched a short film about black hair. Reflection: I learned that many people still oppress black people because of their hair. I will stand against this if there comes a time where this happens around me.

If you could plan the perfect spring break with no limitation, money, time, or responsibilities—what would it look like? Where would you go, who would you bring, and what would you do?

Prompt Response: I would plan a trip with my parents to an art museum and treat them to a nice meal and a relaxing hotel. I would make sure they got to eat good food. I would find an aquarium for us to visit nearby, Summary: We worked on a commonlit assignment. Reflection: I learned that eating bugs isn't that gross. I will use this to open my mind up on different foods.

Throughout your classmates' presentations, you were exposed to a variety of cultural foods and traditions. How did these presentations shape your understanding of different cultures? Share your opinion on what stood out most.

Prompt Response: The presentations made me realize that most people share certain aspects of food culture. Hannah's presentation stood out to me the most because she included many different cultures in her presentation. I found it interesting that everyone had healing food that was a kind of soup. Summary: We watched each other's presentations. Reflection: I realized that we are all connected by food. I will use this to cook more to show my love for others.

Today, we explored how food connects to identity, culture, and belonging across the TED Talk, Fish Cheeks, and the Mississippi Delta film. How does food help individuals understand who they are, especially when they feel caught between cultures or judged by others?

Prompt Response: Food helps people understand who they are by acting as an anchor for their cultures. They are able to stay true to their roots and incorporate new aspects of their cultures. Just like the bacon fried rice.  Summary: We learned about the Mississippi Delta Chinese.  Reflection: I realized that there are all kinds of people everywhere. I will use this to consider different cultures.
