After reading the first five letters of The Color Purple, reflect on your thoughts and emotions as you experienced Celie’s early voice and struggles.

Prompt Response: I thought that it was very sad that even today, many women will blame victims rather than their abusers. It says a lot about our society when we tend to point out what someone did to deserve abuse rather than what the abuser did. I felt heartbroken for Celie because no child should have to go through that kind of pain. I was especially upset because parents should protect their children rather than blame and hurt them. It was very sad that Celie went through so much to protect her sister.

Summary: We began reading the Color Purple in class today.

Reflection:  I realized that even though we have changed as a society, we still oppress many minorities. I will use this information to protest for oppressed groups.

Write about something you’ve always been curious about.

When Celie says, “The God I been praying and writing to is a man. And act just like all the other mens I know,” she expresses disappointment, betrayal, and disillusionment. Discuss a moment in your own life when something you believed in turned out to be different than what you imagined. How did this realization shape your identity or worldview?

As Celie’s world expands in these letters, she begins noticing new things about the people in her life. Write about a moment when you suddenly noticed something funny, shocking, or unexpected about someone you see every day (a family member, a classmate, or even a teacher). How did that new discovery change the way you saw them?
