Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks and spending time with family over a nice dinner. Write about your most unforgettable meal.

Prompt Response: When I was out with my parents one evening, we went to a seafood restaurant. I really love seafood, so I was happy that my parents took me there. It was also a really nice restaurant, and I was able to spend time with my loved ones. I remember we had a seafood platter, and I really liked the oysters. I also really liked eating the seafood soups. Summary: We read The Color Purple and completed a quiz. Reflection:  I learned that there are many interpretations to the same story/letter. I will use this to better understand the perspectives in the story.

As Celie’s world expands in these letters, she begins noticing new things about the people in her life. Write about a moment when you suddenly noticed something funny, shocking, or unexpected about someone you see every day (a family member, a classmate, or even a teacher). How did that new discovery change the way you saw them?

Prompt Response: I recently realized that my boyfriend always said crud and terribly. I thought it was really funny because I had never heard anyone else say it as much as him. When I realized this, I found out that we had really grown closer. It was nice to know that we had come to know each other better after several years. It was also a testament to our bond. Summary: We did a writable assignment on The Color Purple.  Reflection: I learned that there are many different ways to read one story. I will use this to look at one story from several points of view.

These letters show how Celie learns from the people around her, even in small ways. Think of someone in your life who influences you in a positive, everyday way—a friend, relative, teacher, or teammate. Write about what you’ve learned from them and how their influence shows up in your daily life.

Prompt Response: My AP Biology teacher taught me that I need to learn how to prioritize my mental health. She told us that we should not work  into the early hours of the morning. She taught me that I should simply ask my teachers for understanding. I still struggle with putting my foot down and going to sleep, but I try when I can. When I go to sleep early I think of her.  Summary: We read more of The Color Purple. Reflection:  I learned how to use Writable. I will use this platform in the future to learn about The Color Purple.

Creating a video is more than just placing pictures together—it’s about capturing a feeling. Explain how you tried to bring your assigned letter to life in your Adobe Express video. What mood were you aiming for, and how did your editing choices help you communicate the message or emotion of the letter?

Prompt Response: I tried to bring letter 7 to life by using videos that captured the events that were being described. I was able to bring it to life through the use of music as well. I was aiming for a dejected tone because Celie was essentially being sold by her father. The latter was communicating to the audience that black women were mistreated during this time. I wanted to be able to show how depressed Celie must have been. Summary: We watched video presentations for The Color Purple. Reflection:  I learned about the different moods and themes that are present in The Color Purple. I will use this to expand my knowledge of this book and its characters.

At the end of Letter 21, Celie and Sofia share a rare moment of laughter that softens the tension between them. Write about a time when you and a sibling or family member shared an unexpected moment of joy after things had been tense or confusing. Explain how that moment helped bring you closer.

Prompt Response: My mom took me out to get pancakes after my mental breakdown after an audition. I was very stressed and my parents were worried about me. It was a Tuesday, and we never did anything on weekdays, but my mom wanted to cheer me up. It made me really happy to know how much she cared for me. It was a really great memory. Summary: We worked on our The Color Purple video presentations. Reflection: I learned more about the adobe express website format. I will continue to use this website to make video essays.

Celie tells Harpo to “beat” Sofia because she believes that’s how men control women, but this advice causes pain and conflict. Think about a time when someone gave you advice that sounded right at first but ended up being wrong. How did it affect your situation or relationships? What lesson did you learn about thinking for yourself?

Prompt Response: One time, I was told it was a good idea to take AP Language. While I did learn how to write well, my mental health declined. I learned that I need to know what I can and can't do. While college is important, I needed to prioritize my health. Overall my relationship didn't change because it was my stupidity that led me to think it would be easy. Summary: We began on our The Color Purple video presentation. Reflection:  I learned how to use adobe express. I will use this for future projects.

Letters 11–16 show how relationships can be full of misunderstanding and pressure. Harpo wants love, but he also wants power. Sofia wants freedom, not control. Reflect on a time when someone’s desire for control hurt a friendship or relationship. What advice would you give to Harpo or Sofia if you could?

Prompt Response: My friend would always want to hang out without planning anything. He would become upset and disregard my feelings when I was busy or tired. It wasn't that big of an issue until he began to tell our other friends that he resented me for it. I would tell Sofia and Harpo that they have to be honest with one another and talk things through. I would also let them know that it is important to discuss what tasks they are willing to do.  Summary: We read more of The Color Purple in class today. Reflection: I learned that there are many people in the world that cannot be with family. I will use this to try helping people reunite with their families.

In letters 6 -10, we see how Celie starts noticing the strength of people around her, like Shug Avery’s independence and confidence. Think about someone in your life who inspires you to be stronger or more confident. What qualities do they have that you admire and try to learn from?

Prompt Response: My parents inspire me because they were able to come to America and make a good life for themselves. It's not easy to leave behind your whole life and come to a new place all by yourself, but they were able to make it work. I admire their hardworking nature and their resilience. I hope I can be just as hard working as them.  Summary: We read the Color Purple and analyzed the book. Reflection: I learned that some kids learn to grow up faster than others because they want to protect their siblings. I will use this to understand others better.

After reading the first five letters of The Color Purple, reflect on your thoughts and emotions as you experienced Celie’s early voice and struggles.

Prompt Response: I thought that it was very sad that even today, many women will blame victims rather than their abusers. It says a lot about our society when we tend to point out what someone did to deserve abuse rather than what the abuser did. I felt heartbroken for Celie because no child should have to go through that kind of pain. I was especially upset because parents should protect their children rather than blame and hurt them. It was very sad that Celie went through so much to protect her sister. Summary: We began reading the Color Purple in class today. Reflection:  I realized that even though we have changed as a society, we still oppress many minorities. I will use this information to protest for oppressed groups.
