Think about a moment when you challenged your parent(s)’ rules or expectations. How did you feel, and what was the outcome?

Prompt Response: I really didn't want to play piano after a couple of years. By a couple I mean about 10 years of banging away at those cursed keys. My mom really loved music and she wanted me to play piano well like any other good Chinese kid. When I finally quit, I felt so free, and it was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. After all these years of playing, I can finally appreciate being able to play several instruments, but when I look back on all of the hardships, I don't know if it was worth it.

Summary: We read "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan and discussed the story.

Reflection: I learned that being forced to play piano is a very common experience for Chinese people. I will use this to make note of how others treat music.

Write about something you’ve always been curious about.

When Celie says, “The God I been praying and writing to is a man. And act just like all the other mens I know,” she expresses disappointment, betrayal, and disillusionment. Discuss a moment in your own life when something you believed in turned out to be different than what you imagined. How did this realization shape your identity or worldview?

As Celie’s world expands in these letters, she begins noticing new things about the people in her life. Write about a moment when you suddenly noticed something funny, shocking, or unexpected about someone you see every day (a family member, a classmate, or even a teacher). How did that new discovery change the way you saw them?
