You’ve been in Multicultural Literature for about 4.5 weeks. How has the class been going for you so far?

Prompt Response: I feel like I've been doing well in the class. It isn't too challenging, and it's nice that I'm able to be with so many of my friends. There's always something more to learn about others and their cultures and that's nice to know as well. Of course this class is nowhere near as challenging as my previous literature classes, but it is senior year, so I'm able to prioritize other things instead. Overall it's been a pleasant experience. 


Summary: We worked on vocab to prepare for The Joy Luck Club.


Reflection: I learned that reverie can mean like a daydream. I will use this to expand my vocabulary in the future.

Prompt Response: I was never good at comforting people. It's my worst nightmare to comfort someone incorrectly and make things worse. Despite this, my friend needed someone to talk to and I was going to be there for them no matter what. I wish I was better at words when it came to things like this, but I did my best and they got better in the end, so I guess I didn't do too badly. Everyone has to work on their weaknesses sometimes after all. Summary: We worked on our character posters. Reflection: I realized that finishing your work ahead of time saves a lot of trouble. Prompt Response: In Mean Girls, there is the stereotype that the perfect girls are skinny and girly. The film also depicts nerds as being a bunch of guys that love math. At that time it made me think that pretty girls were selfish and shallow. Summary: We watched stereotypes about Asian and black women. Reflection: I learned about the stereotypes from my culture. I will use this to fight back against bias.

When Celie says, “The God I been praying and writing to is a man. And act just like all the other mens I know,” she expresses disappointment, betrayal, and disillusionment. Discuss a moment in your own life when something you believed in turned out to be different than what you imagined. How did this realization shape your identity or worldview?

Prompt Response: I believed that I would always be friends with my first best friend. We were best friends for around seven years before we stopped being friends. I realized that we had grown apart and that there wasn't anything I could do about it. I realized that overtime you meet new people and lose your old friends, and that is just how life goes. Everyone needs to move on. Summary: We read more of The Color Purple and wrote a poem. Reflection: I realized that women have always been fighting for more freedom. I will use this to continue fighting for women's rights.
